Platelet Rich Plasma

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets). The platelets have been best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries.

PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors, can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer).  To obtain your PRP, we first draw your blood. We then use our Emcyte machine to obtain your PurePRP.

Regenerative Approaches For Joint Health: Prolotherapy, short for proliferative therapy, is a minimally invasive, natural treatment that can work on any joint. The regenerative injection therapy, which relieves pain by strengthening ligaments and tendons supporting the joint, involves the injection of a dextrose solution directly into the affected area. The body’s inflammation response kicks in, resulting in production of collagen and regrowth of new fibers in ligaments and tendons.

Why use Pure PRP instead of the traditional PRP?

Pure PRP has an advantage over traditional PRP in that it requires a two-step concentration process which eliminates red blood cells and neutrophils. Red blood cells show no therapeutic effects for regeneration, and may create a more viscous solution which can be more painful when injected. Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, have inflammatory components which may increase pain and inflammation post-treatment. To avoid complications, we achieve perfect placement every time. This ensures greater results including less pain and inflammation, increased strength and overall function.

What can I expect?

The total process does not take very long, usually  about 30 minutes. You may have mild discomfort and swelling after the injection  Al amount of blood is drawn and placed in a FDA medically approved container. The container is placed in a specialized centrifuge to spin and separate the blood. The Pure PRP layer is removed from the red blood cells and is precisely injected using our NextGen Logiqe ultrasound machine.  Movement and light massage can promote circulation and assist in healing. The pure PRP tells your cells to repair and rebuild your damaged tissue. The rebuilding takes place over a 4-6 week period. Your body is healing itself. Expect to see significant improvement in symptoms over the healing time. Depending on your situation, some patients may require a few treatments to achieve optimal results.
